The Rise of ‘My Story’ Marketing
People love a good story. This is a cold hard fact of life. This, however, is not a new phenomenon. Anthropologists and historians believe that the art of storytelling has been with us since the beginning of human existence. In fact, much of humanity has been defined by stories.
This fact holds true today as well. When you want to relay the events of last night’s hot date to your best friend, how are you going to do it? Are you going to blather off a list bullet points about the evening? That’s not very likely. Chances are you will tell a story about how the date went.
We can use stories to talk about the past or the future. Stories help us to relate to one another in a powerful way. When it comes to marketing your business, there is tremendous power in your story. In fact, as a small business owner, one of the greatest assets that you have in your marketing efforts is your story. Your story will help to humanize you and is the ultimate tool for differentiation in a vast sea of similar products and services.
Employ “my story” marketing by being willing to let your audience know about the origins of your business in real depth. You can outline what led you to be a business owner in the first place. You can let your audience know more about who you are as a person and what your values are. All of these things help people to lower their guards and see you as a human being. You wont just seem like another company looking to separate their money from their wallets. “My story” marketing will allow you to lay the foundation for your audience to trust you. This is very important.
How to Start Writing a Story
Learning how to write a story correctly is one of the most important skills a writer can master. Of course novels are pure story but the techniques are exactly the same as those you use in non-fiction stories.
In non-fiction, a story is usually either a personal story, a testimonial, or a case study. These are true stories about real people and are used to place your product or ideas in an emotional context that shows exactly what it does and how it affects people.
A non-fiction story starts at exactly the same place a fictional story starts. Here are the key elements found at the beginning of a non-fiction story: An intriguing opening line. This is critical. The opening line has one purpose, to get you to read the next line. It must introduce the character, create a question in the reader’s mind, and give hints as to what will come in the story. The character’s status quo situation.This is where the character has been and what the character has done for a certain amount of time. In some stories it can be about a character who owns a business who has some success but is not satisfied. A strong character who wants something badly. In the personal story, this character is you. In case studies or testimonials it is the person who uses your services. It is critical that the character have a strong desire or there is no story. An event happens that changes the status quo. This launches the story. It can be a negative event in the character’s life such as the loss of a job or major client or a positive event like a marriage or birth of a child. The key element is that the status quo changes.
Children story books, a tool for development
We all know how children love their story book. They choose their own favorite story and can listen to it time and again for months, every night. They make a character their friend and reading the book a custom before retiring onto bed. These children story books play a major role in the mental and moral development of a child.
Children Story Books from different age choose different kind of story book and we should help them in doing that as a guardian. Like for a child of two year old, you should pick a book with lots of picture in it. There are even the story books in the market with pop up pictures. These kinds of books are liked by children very much. Second thing you need to keep in mind while buying a story book is, that the stories should be rhyming. These kind of stories are fun for children and are easy to remember. These story help them building vocabulary and help them making a good command over the language.
There should be amoral lesson in the story. These kids learn these stories by heart and remember it throughout their life, so it is better we teach them morals along with the story. All good stories have some moral in it, like all time favorite little red riding hood is about the lesson, which we try to tell our kids, don’t trust the strangers. Three little pig tell we should stand together at the time of adversity. Pinocchio teaches , not to lie if you want to be a good human being. Jack and the bean stalk says don’t get conned by luring deals. Cinderella and snow-white stories make children learn that god help the people who are good at heart.
The Importance of Stories
Long before the advent of a written history, the elders of ancient civilizations used stories to teach the new generation. The lessons might have related to the values of the society, their particular version of how they came to be, their purpose on the earth, or methods of obtaining food or a spouse.
The most well known of the ancient stories were the civilisation’s particular version of how Earth came into existence and how they came to be here on earth. These are known as the great Creation Stories. Every civilisation had an explanation for what the Earth sun, moon and stars were, along with more intricate details of the place of fire, water, animals and humans in the ecosystem.
The Creation Stories of various civilizations include the Stories from Genesis in the Bible (the writer here makes no value judgment on the veracity of the account in Genesis, merely acknowledging it was part of Jewish oral history before the actual writing of the Bible), to the Dreamtime of the Australian Aborigines, along with the whole gamut in between. These two examples are used as “bookends” because the Stories in Genesis have been printed and distributed more than any other literary work, whereas much of the Australian Aboriginal account has yet to be even collated in one place, let alone set down in writing.
Over time, the stories were written down for ease of teaching. During this period, the Bible Stories, Aesop’s Fables, Homer’s Epics the Iliad and the Odyssey, along with countless other classics were recorded on stone, paper, papyrus or some similar form. As literacy became more prevalent and written works were used for teaching purposes to a greater extent, the long, detailed stories were stripped of their emotional content and reduced to their bare essence.

The short story genre is one that is thriving – but only in certain places. Where are they?
A short story can be roughly defined as any work of fiction below about 12,000 words. A greater wordcount tends to move the story into the realms of the ‘Novella’ or Novelette’, a niche in the writing field that falls between the short story and the full-blown novel.
For many years the short story was a thriving branch of fiction but took a downturn during the middle section of the 20th. century. More publishers began to favour the novel as, understandably, they saw that a novel gave them more chance of turning a profit than a short story and, at the pinnacle, could be turned into a Hollywood blockbuster. But consider this – several short stories have been been the basis for not only movies but (oddly enough) a spin-off book! Perhaps the best known is ‘The Sentinel’ by Arthur C. Clarke. This went on to become one of the most famous films ever – ’2001, A Space Odyssey’ – and then the book of the same name was written!
It’s interesting to note that, these days, one genre where the short story is thriving is in science fiction and fantasy. Magazines such as ‘The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction’ are still going strong after better than fifty years, whilst ezines such as ‘Interzone’ represent the new wave. If there’s one area a new writer can compete in, it’s the Sci-Fi or Fantasy short story.
If , however, you’re not the least bit interested – or capable – or writing within the Sci-Fi or Fantasy field, what is there left to you? Well, a great area for short story writers to work in is within the field of magazines for women. Some of these have readerships in the millions and most exceed circualtions of 100,000. That’s an awful lot of exposure for any writer! In fact, most novelists would consider their latest book a huge success if they sold copies in those sort of numbers.
Short story writing is also a great discipline for a writer. Often written to a strict wordcount, and for a very discriminating audience, any writer will benefit from writing short stories – they encourage tight plotting, good character development and real attention to detail. Indeed, many short story writers have said that the experience they gained in the short story field was of huge value when they came to write longer work.
There is also a category of writer who writes only short stories. Again in the Sci-Fi field, Isaac Asimov is remembered for his famous ‘Robot’ books (the recent film ‘I Robot’ was based on his work), but his most prolific writing was in the short story field, in which he wrote literally hundreds of short stories, not only in Sci-Fi but also Crime and Mystery – his ‘Black Widowers’ stories being amongst the most fascinating ever written in the field.
These areas – Sci-fi/fantasy and women’s magazines – are then two major areas where short stories are not only holding on but are in fact thriving. If you want experience in writing and to see your name in print, they are a good way of achieving the status of ‘published author’. That’s not to say they are easy markets – competition can be fierce. However, they have been for many years the entrance level for many authors and there’s no reason you cannot follow in their footsteps.

It’s not that easy to tell a story well and especially not when it’s a long one. It needs a certain ability to keep children engaged while they are listening to words with no other props to hold their attention. Presenting a story well is an ability that many teachers have, but may find difficult. Story telling, unless you’re a natural and warm to the task, can be hard work. Nevertheless, it is a method of communication that has a special place in the education and development of children. A place that may not always be appreciated to the measure it deserves.
Children are surrounded by many stories these days, mostly on TV or DVD. There is never a shortage of the next tale to look at. The creativity of these productions makes the teacher, who uses words only to describe the scene and development of a plot, pale into insignificance. At least, it seems that way, unless one is aware of the value to be found in a word based approach in story telling against the flashy and shiny presentations of the entertainment industry; unless one realizes, as many people do, that children are quite happy to listen to a story well told. A good story is a wonderful way in which to learn about words and encourages the use of imagination. Neither words nor imagination feature greatly in an exposure to film or animation. There the ideas surrounding the story have all been unpacked and are presented ready-made. The children are taken up more with dazzle than with the depth that language and imagination can invoke.
Teachers are well aware of the importance of language in the development of a child. Therefore, they would be on the look-out for teaching aids towards this continually. However, there may not be that much available, especially not with longer stories. Where are the aids that focus on language without demanding of the teacher to become ‘the great story teller from the sky?’
A good story allows children to get involved with words and imagination. It can also help them in their spirituality – meaning the recognition that as people they are spiritual beings. Story has been greatly used in human history as an introduction to the things beyond. In modern days with many people professing not to prescribe to religion the importance of the spiritual side of life is no less. For instance, might a person’s attitude have a spiritual rather than rational origin? After all, it comes from deep within and often resides well beyond the cognitive processes involved. How about love and hate; where does that come from?
Of course, not every story will lend itself to assisting in the spirituality of children. And if it does, the possible benefits remain mostly hidden unless the story is discussed as to its significance and meaning. Undoubtedly, children are well able to enter into helpful discussion when a story is of suitable quality. The benefits to English learning will depend greatly on the richness of the language used. The idea that children can only handle the simplest of expressions and otherwise will lose the gist of a tale simply isn’t true. Rather, it’s important to expose them to good English, that is descriptive and of a higher quality than the language generally used in conversations between people or on TV.
One may ask where story presentations that fit the above-mentioned criteria can be found.
There is a dearth in significant stories that aren’t produced in film or animation. In which the old story telling approach is used in a modern way. The only story in that category I know of, is the Eloise adventure recently published by Kid-Ebook using multimedia. It is available for teachers in English learning and discussions on life skills.

Although the structure and plot of a short story can take many forms, a typical short story will often follow the principles set out below. Following such a pattern can be especially useful for those starting out in short story writing, or for those who are struggling with the demands of telling a story in such a compressed form. Following these principles will help simplify the process of writing a great short story.
Introduction – in which the setting, characters and circumstances of the story are succinctly described and brought to the reader’s attention. It is the combination of these that will usually set up the problem that causes the conflict of the story.
Development – when the characters interact with each other and try to find the solution to the problem and hence to resolve the conflict. This involves the development of both the characters and the means by which they will try to solve their problem
Conflict – the central issue of the story. The lifeblood of dramatic writing is the conflict, or the problem, which lies at the heart of the story. The conflict may be between two characters, or between a character and an element of the environment in which the story occurs, or it may be an internal conflict for one of the characters. However, there must always be a unity between the conflict and the way in which the characters try to resolve the problem. A man who has never picked a lock before can not escape a room by picking the lock. Whatever the form of a short story it is hard to imagine one without conflict.
Climax – the moment of high emotion when the character or characters succeed or fail in their attempt to solve the problem and thus bring an end to the conflict; it is the point where the conflict is settled. The climax is the dramatic moment of the story and the one that it has been building to throughout. Often it is the moment that accounts for some kind of change in one of the characters. The climax should always be at one with the story, that is to say connected and flowing from what has come before. Like a joke needs a good punch line that brings together the elements of the joke, so the story needs just such a climax.
Conclusion – where the story is finished off. There are, of course, a number of ways in which a story can be ended. It can be happy or sad, successful or a failure; it could be concealed (not obvious through the story, but with clues throughout) or it could be a sting in the tail. However, there should always be a sense of satisfaction by the reader with the ending. The reader should realise the significance of what has gone before and may also achieve some insight into their understandings or values as a result of what they have read.
The above is no more than a guide to help develop an idea that is just bursting to be put on paper. Once it is there, it may take a slightly different form or diverge in a more fundamental way. However, 90% of the battle with writing is just getting started and this is a robust method planning and getting the idea onto paper. Lastly, don’t forget the golden rule of writing: enjoy the experience. It should never feel like work.

Who does not like stories? I am not talking only about children, but also for adults. Whether you are watching television or reading a book, anything in form of story holds the attention. We all love to hear stories. The art of story telling has to be learnt. Not everyone can tell a story in an interesting way. How is dating and story telling connected? Let me tell you.
During dates, especially during the first date with a person, it sometimes becomes difficult to converse. We cannot think of any good topic that can be discussed. We are advised that we should avoid talking about religion and politics. We are told that we should not ask many intimate questions. We are told that we should avoid talking about our finances and our past relationships. We are told to avoid so many tings by different experts that some of us do not understand what they should talk about with their date.
The answer is – tell stories. Look back at your life and think of instances that were funny and exciting. They brought you much fun and excitement, isn’t it? Talk of those instances in form of stories. Think of instances- anything that happened in your office or your neighborhood, something that happened when you were holidaying. Any incident that was funny and exciting can be turned into a story. A story always holds the attention. Even now when you are an adult, a good story will hold your attention. Stories have an attraction for the human mind. Use stories during your date.
Once you develop the art of story telling, you will not find it difficult at all to hold attention of your date at all times. You will not feel embarrassed with the silence. Read newspapers and find out how they tell stories. Study the method of beginning of the story, the building up of the story and the ending. Read few stories as a student. You will learn many ideas about how to tell a story in a gripping manner during a date.

Short stories have not always found their place in great literature. Thanks to great writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Anton Chekhov and others, short stories have received great notoriety.
Short story writing is a unique art and vastly different than novel writing in form and purpose. Where novel writing is complicated, has many things going on and creates a world of possibilities, short story writing focuses on a quick, powerful impact.
Charles May wrote, “If the novel creates the illusion of reality by presenting a literal authenticity to the material facts of the external world, as Ian Watt suggests, the short story attempts to be authentic to the immaterial reality of the inner world of the self in its relation to eternal rather than temporal reality.
“If the novel’s quest for extensional reality takes place in the social world and the material of its analyses are manners as the indication of one’s soul, as Lionel Trilling says, the field of research for the short story is the primitive, antisocial world of the unconscious, and the material of its analysis are not manners, but dreams.
“The results of this distinction are that whereas the novel is primarily a social and public form, the short story is mythic and spiritual. While the novel is primarily structured on a conceptual and philosophical framework, the short story is intuitive and lyrical. The novel exists to reaffirm the world of ‘everyday’ reality; the short story exists to ‘defamiliarize’ the everyday.
“Storytelling does not spring from one’s confrontation with the everyday world, but rather from one’s encounter with the sacred (in which true reality is revealed in all its plenitude) or with the absurd (in which true reality is revealed in all its vacuity).”
Thus writers of short stories take a different approach and use different techniques than that of novel writers. Rather than looking at the outward world for familiar like the novel, the short story looks at the inward world of the individual and tries to defamiliarize the outside world. By doing so the short story is a powerful way to point out individual and social misunderstandings.
As a result the reader of short stories can focus on the pivotal climax of the short story as the peak of what the author is trying to get across. The art is to see the short scenes before the climax and how the make the pivotal moment happen in such a short amount of time.
Being that the short story is short, authors need not concern themselves with unnecessary details that will distract from the authors goal. When writing short stories it may be appropriate to write and write and write, then cross out half of what has been written. This will help eliminate unnecessary, distracting details.
Short stories are not novellas either. Novellas are simply short novels and they strive for a similar effect of a novel. Some longer short stories may resemble a novella because of length but; the intent, design and focus is different.
The short story gives glimpses of lives and events; whereas, the novel or novella encapsulate entire lives and multiple events. Some short stories span whole lives, showing different glimpses of a life. This is different than a novel or novella because, the short story will show certain events that work toward its aim and focus.
